You made it, so you’re responsible for where it ends up.
Extended Producer Responsibility makes brand owners accountable for the end-of-life collection and recycling of what they sell in India. Five waste categories, five separate CPCB portals, one team to register, target, and file returns for all of them.
What EPR Actually Requires
Extended Producer Responsibility shifts the cost and logistics of collecting and recycling a product after its useful life onto whoever produced, imported, or branded it — not the government or the consumer. It currently covers e-waste, plastic packaging, batteries, tyres and used oil in India.
Who Sets the Rules
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change sets the policy framework, while the Central Pollution Control Board and state pollution control boards administer registration, annual targets and return filing for each waste category separately.
It’s Not a One-Time Filing
EPR isn’t a certificate you get once. It’s an ongoing obligation — annual collection targets to hit, recycled-content thresholds to meet, and yearly returns to file for as long as you keep selling the product.
Four signs your product needs EPR authorization
Most electronics and packaged-goods brands trigger at least one of these — often more than one at once.
Contains Electronics
Any product with a circuit board, battery, or electronic component falls under e-waste EPR.
Sold in Plastic Packaging
Rigid or flexible plastic packaging around your product triggers plastic-waste EPR, regardless of category.
Contains a Battery
Removable or built-in, any battery inside your product triggers battery-waste EPR separately from e-waste.
Tyres or Bulk Lubricant Oil
Manufacturers and importers of tyres, or bulk users/generators of used oil, need their own dedicated authorization.

E-waste EPR CPCB
Authorization covering the collection and recycling of electronic and electrical equipment at end-of-life — the most common EPR requirement for consumer electronics, IT hardware and appliance brands.
Plastic Waste EPR CPCB
Registration and recycled-content compliance for rigid and flexible plastic packaging — including Category I’s 30% recycled-content requirement, effective from FY 2025–26 for eligible packaging types.
Battery Waste EPR CPCB
Producer responsibility authorization under the Battery Waste Management Rules — required for anyone manufacturing, importing, or selling products containing batteries, tracked separately from e-waste EPR.
Tyre Waste EPR CPCB
Registration for tyre manufacturers and importers, covering collection and recycling obligations for tyres reaching end-of-life across the Indian market.
Used Oil Authorization CPCB
Compliance for the collection, storage and disposal of used lubricant oil, relevant to bulk generators, workshops and importers who handle oil at volume.
One product, multiple EPR obligations
Because each waste category runs on its own rules and portal, a single product commonly needs two or three EPR authorizations at once — not a choice between them.
From product audit to filed returns, in five stages
Product Audit
We identify every EPR category your product’s materials and components trigger.
Portal Registration
Authorization is filed on each relevant CPCB portal for your product category.
Target Planning
Collection and recycling targets are mapped against your sales volumes.
PRO Coordination
We connect you with Producer Responsibility Organisations to meet targets practically.
Annual Return Filing
We track deadlines and file yearly returns so nothing lapses unnoticed.
What’s changed in EPR compliance recently
FY 2025–26Recycled-content target raised for rigid plastic packaging. Category I rigid plastic packaging now carries a 30% minimum recycled-content requirement — this needs to be reflected in both sourcing decisions and annual EPR filings.
FY 2024–25Annual return filing window extended. The deadline for filing FY 2024–25 EPR annual returns across e-waste, plastic, battery and tyre categories was pushed to December 31, 2025 — filing calendars shift most years, so we confirm the current window each cycle rather than relying on a fixed date.
Common questions about EPR authorization
Do I need EPR if I only import, not manufacture, in India?
Can one authorization cover both e-waste and battery EPR?
What happens if I don’t meet my annual collection target?
What is a PRO and do I need one?
Is EPR a one-time registration or does it renew?
