BEE Voluntary Star Labelling

Voluntary BEE star rating: turn energy efficiency into a selling point.

Motors, pumps, laptops, microwaves, pedestal fans, solar modules, EV chargers and 25 appliance types in all can carry a BEE star label without it being mandatory. A recognised government rating helps you stand out to buyers, and gets you ready before an appliance moves to the mandatory list.

Why Register Voluntarily

What a voluntary star label does for you

A Rating Buyers Recognise

The BEE star label is the government’s energy rating that Indian consumers and procurement teams already compare. It turns efficiency claims into a verified number.

Ready Before It’s Mandatory

Appliances move from voluntary to mandatory over time. LED lamps and ceiling fans did, and induction hobs follow on 1 January 2027. Registered brands keep selling on day one.

Searchable and Verifiable

Registered models appear on BEE’s Star Label portal and app, and the QR code lets buyers check the rating themselves.

Voluntary vs Mandatory

What’s different when you register voluntarily

You choose to label Your call

There’s no legal requirement to label a voluntary appliance, but once you register and use the label, every label rule and check-testing provision applies to that model.

Agreement with BEE Standard format

Voluntary label users sign an agreement in BEE’s standard format alongside their company and appliance registration.

Check testing still applies Market samples

BEE can buy and test voluntary-labelled products. A failed rating has the same consequences as for mandatory products, so ratings must be accurate.

Quick Answers

Common questions about BEE voluntary labelling

General purpose industrial motors, air compressors, submersible, openwell and monoset pumps, diesel monoset pumps, microwave ovens, induction hobs, laptops and notebooks, office automation products, ballasts, solid state inverters, diesel generator sets, solar water heaters, tyres, lithium-ion traction battery packs, pedestal, table and wall fans, packaged boilers, side-by-side refrigerators, commercial beverage coolers, refrigerant compressors, solar PV modules, evaporative air coolers and EV chargers.
No. Voluntary products can be sold without a star label. But a label can only be used with BEE's permission, and once you use it, the same labelling and check-testing rules apply.
A BEE star rating gives buyers a recognised, verifiable measure of efficiency, helps you stand out against unrated competitors, and prepares you for appliances that later become mandatory, as induction hobs will on 1 January 2027.
It's set per appliance in Schedule B of the 2026 regulations, for example ₹5 per kW for industrial motors, ₹20 per submersible pump set, ₹20 per laptop, ₹35 per DG set, ₹5 per kW for EV chargers and ₹0.025 per watt for solar modules.
Yes. Voluntary label users sign an agreement in BEE's standard format, available on the BEE Star Label portal, as part of registration.
Yes. BEE has moved appliances such as LED lamps and ceiling fans to the mandatory list, and induction hobs become mandatory on 1 January 2027. Registering early avoids a rush when the change takes effect.
