BEE Star Label Registration

BEE registration and star rating for appliances sold in India.

Refrigerators, ACs, fans, TVs, geysers, washing machines, LED lamps and more can only carry a star label with permission from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency. For mandatory appliances, that label is a legal condition of sale. We register your company, test and file each model, and keep you compliant with the new 2026 BEE regulations.

BEE Registration Explained

What the BEE star label is, and who needs it

What It Is

The Standards & Labelling programme of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, under the Energy Conservation Act, 2001. A star label shows an appliance’s tested energy performance, from 1 to 5 stars, with a QR code linking to its registered details.

Who Must Register

Under the 2026 regulations, every company that manufactures, sells or imports a mandatory appliance must register with BEE and get permission for each appliance and each model before affixing a label.

Mandatory vs Voluntary

Mandatory appliances can’t be sold without a valid star label. Voluntary appliances can, but a star rating is a strong selling point, and items move to mandatory over time.

How It Works

BEE registration in five tracked stages

BEE scrutinises a complete application within 30 working days. Most of the time goes into testing and getting documents right first time.

1

Rating & Scope Check

We confirm the schedule, the current star-rating table and label series for your appliance, and any BIS licence it needs first.

Week 1
2

NABL Testing

Each model is tested to the BEE schedule at an NABL-accredited lab, or your own lab if it’s NABL-accredited, to fix its star level.

Week 1–4
3

Company Registration

Your company is registered on the BEE Standards & Labelling portal with the one-time fee and documents.

Week 2–4
4

Appliance & Model Filing

The appliance is registered with the security deposit, then each model with its test report, label artwork and fee. BEE scrutinises within 30 working days.

Week 4–9
5

Permission & Labelling

Permission to affix the star label is granted for 3 years. You print QR-coded labels and file quarterly label fees; we track renewals and rating revisions.

On approval
Documents

What you’ll need for BEE registration

The exact list depends on the appliance and whether it’s mandatory or voluntary.

Company Documents

  • Trademark certificateIn the name of the company that will use the label, or brand authorisation.
  • ISO 9001 certificateFor each manufacturing facility, in its name and address.
  • Authorised signatory letterOn letterhead, with names and specimen signatures.
  • MSME / SSI certificateTo qualify for the reduced ₹50,000 security deposit.

Model Documents

  • NABL test report for each modelShowing the model number, test date and declared rated values.
  • BIS licence or registrationWhere the appliance also needs BIS, with the model endorsed.
  • Label artworkMatching BEE’s design, colours, size and QR placement for that appliance.
  • Agreement with BEE (voluntary products)In BEE’s standard format for voluntary appliances.
After Registration

Staying compliant under the 2026 rules

The new regulations tightened enforcement. These are the obligations that catch brands out.

QR-coded labels everywhere you sell Online & offline

Every registered unit needs the self-adhesive star label with its QR code, and it must be visible at both shop and e-commerce points of sale. BEE can direct marketplaces to delist non-compliant models.

Authorised seller list every year By 30 April

Permittees must give BEE an updated list of authorised sellers by 30 April each year. Missing it is a ground for revoking label permission.

Rating revisions 60 days

When BEE revises the energy performance standards, you submit a self-declaration within 60 days confirming compliance and relabelling with the new rating table.

Check testing Market & factory samples

BEE and state agencies buy samples from factories, shops and online platforms. If a first test fails, a second test on double the quantity runs at two labs at your cost. A final failure means public notice, stock withdrawal, penalties and possible withdrawal of label permission.

Overseas Brands

BEE registration for imported appliances

Who Holds It

Registration is held by the company that manufactures, sells or imports the appliance in India, so overseas manufacturers usually register through their Indian subsidiary, importer or brand partner.

Country of Origin

The 2026 label must show the country where the appliance was made, assembled or substantially processed, alongside the brand, model and star level.

BIS Comes First

Most mandatory appliances also need BIS ISI or CRS. We plan both approvals together so imported stock clears customs and sells with a valid label.

Quick Answers

Common questions about BEE registration

BEE registration is permission from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency to put its star label on an appliance under the Standards and Labelling programme. The company registers once, then registers each appliance and each model, backed by a test report from an NABL-accredited lab.
Mandatory appliances include refrigerators, deep freezers, room and light commercial ACs, chillers, ceiling fans, electric geysers, colour and UHD TVs, washing machines, LED lamps, distribution transformers, grid-connected solar inverters and LPG stoves, with induction hobs from 1 January 2027. Motors, pumps, laptops, microwaves, fans, solar modules, EV chargers and more can be labelled voluntarily.
Under the BEE (Appliance Labeling and Compliance) Regulations, 2026: a one-time ₹5,000 company application fee, a ₹3,00,000 label security deposit per appliance (₹50,000 for small-scale industry), ₹5,000 per model registration application, and a per-unit label fee paid quarterly. Testing is paid to the lab.
Yes. The label security deposit is interest-free and is refunded within 30 days after you notify BEE that you've permanently stopped making that appliance, subject to the regulations.
BEE completes scrutiny within 30 working days of a complete application. If there are discrepancies, the application is put on hold for up to 60 days to fix them, after which it's cancelled. Testing time comes on top, so most models take about one to two months end to end.
Permission to affix the label on a model is granted for three years and must be renewed before it expires. No fee is charged for renewal or continuation where the star rating continues or has been revised.
Yes. The 2026 regulations require each company that manufactures, sells or imports a mandatory appliance to register, so importers and brand owners in India can hold the registration.
Often, yes. Most mandatory appliances, such as ACs, refrigerators, washing machines, fans, geysers and LPG stoves, need a BIS ISI licence, and TVs, LED lamps and solar inverters need BIS CRS registration. BIS covers safety; BEE covers energy performance.
The 2026 regulations require a QR code next to the star label, embedded with the label particulars such as brand, model, star level and country of origin. From 1 April 2027 label fees are to be prepaid when you request QR codes on the BEE portal.
BEE runs a second test on double the quantity at two labs, at the permittee's cost. If that fails, BEE can publish the failure, order stock withdrawal and relabelling, impose penalties under the Energy Conservation (Compliance Enforcement) Rules, 2025, and withdraw label permission for at least three months.
