The right food license, scaled to your turnover.
Every food business in India — from a home kitchen to a national manufacturer — needs an FSSAI approval before it can legally operate. Which tier you need comes down almost entirely to your annual turnover, and the thresholds just changed significantly.
Why Every Food Business Needs This
The Food Safety and Standards Act makes FSSAI approval mandatory for anyone manufacturing, processing, storing, distributing or selling food in India — including home kitchens, cloud kitchens, importers and e-commerce food sellers, not just restaurants and factories.
Turnover Isn’t the Only Factor
While annual turnover decides the default tier, certain business types — importers, 100% export-oriented units, businesses operating across multiple states, and specific high-risk categories — must hold a Central License regardless of how small their turnover is.
It’s Premises-Specific
FSSAI approval is tied to the physical location, not the brand. If you operate more than one outlet, kitchen, or warehouse, each premises typically needs its own registration or license based on that unit’s own turnover and activity.
Which license tier matches your business
Effective April 1, 2026 — the revised thresholds under the FSS (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Amendment Regulations, 2026.
