E-commerce listings must repeat the mandatory declarations.

Not Updating Details

Quick Answers

Common questions about LMPC certificate

An LMPC certificate is registration under Rule 27 of the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011. Every manufacturer, packer and importer of pre-packaged commodities sold in India must register with the Director of Legal Metrology or the Controller of Legal Metrology of the state concerned.
Importers of pre-packaged goods, manufacturers who pack their products, and packers, including contract packers. E-commerce sellers of imported products need it too, along with the mandatory declarations on their listings.
The government fee for registration under Rule 27 is ₹500. Professional fees for preparing the application and reviewing labels are separate.
Under the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Third Amendment Rules, 2026 (G.S.R. 418(E), 29 May 2026), registration certificates stay valid until cancelled, so periodic renewal is no longer needed. Registered companies and firms must update their details annually on the online portal when particulars change.
The 2026 Third Amendment added three things to Rule 27: applicants must name the Director responsible for compliance, registered entities must update details (address, products and quantities, country of origin) annually online, and certificates are valid until cancelled. Importers using Tier-2 or Tier-3 AEO bonded warehouses can also affix declarations there before goods leave.
Typically company registration documents, PAN, GST, IEC for importers, address proof of the premises, ID of the authorised person, the list of products and pack sizes, and samples or artwork of the labels with mandatory declarations.
Yes. BIS certifies the product itself; Legal Metrology governs the declarations on the package. They're separate laws, and a BIS-certified product can still be held for a label violation.
Yes. Imported pre-packaged goods sold online need importer registration, and e-commerce entities must show the mandatory declarations on the listing. From 1 July 2027, listings of imported products must also have a searchable and sortable country-of-origin filter (G.S.R. 312(E)).
Legal Metrology officers can inspect, seize non-compliant packages and prosecute or compound offences under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009. Customs and marketplaces also check declarations, so non-compliant stock can be held or delisted.
