Avoid Rejection

Common FSSAI mistakes

Wrong Category

Applying for registration when your activity needs a central licence (or the reverse) leads to rejection.

Wrong Food Categories

Products not listed on the licence can’t be made or sold under it. Modify before launch.

One Licence for Many Premises

Approvals are premises-specific. Each kitchen, factory or warehouse needs its own.

Unpaid Annual Fee

Perpetual validity still needs the annual fee paid; non-payment can lead to suspension.

Importing Without the Right Licence

Food imports are held at port if the importer’s central licence or categories don’t match.

Head Office Forgotten

Multi-state businesses need a central licence for the head office as well as licences for premises.

Quick Answers

Common questions about FSSAI central license

Food businesses with annual turnover above ₹50 crore (from 1 April 2026), and certain activities at any turnover: importers, exporters including merchant exporters, e-commerce food business operators, 100% EOUs, five-star and above hotels, food businesses in central government premises such as railways, airports and seaports, head offices of businesses in more than one state, and some specialised manufacturing categories.
₹7,500 per year for most categories, payable for multiple years at once.
Yes. Every food importer needs a Central License, with the import business listed, and food imports are cleared through FSSAI's import clearance system at the port.
E-commerce food business operators, meaning the platforms and inventory-based e-commerce entities, need a Central License. Sellers on a marketplace need the approval that matches their own premises and turnover.
Form B, company documents and director or partner IDs, premises proof and layout, list of food categories, equipment list and capacity for manufacturers, water analysis report, food safety management plan, Form IX nomination, and IEC for importers and exporters.
No, for licences issued from 1 April 2026: they stay valid until suspended, cancelled or surrendered, provided annual fees are paid and returns filed.
Manufacturers and importers file Form D1 on FoSCoS, normally by 31 May for the previous financial year. Late filing attracts a penalty.
