Label Compliance Explained

Why packaging gets rejected in India

Indian Declarations Missing

Global packaging rarely carries Indian MRP, unit sale price, importer details or consumer care.

Wrong Units or Sizes

Net quantity must be in standard metric units, in the minimum letter size for the pack.

Online Listings Forgotten

E-commerce pages must show the same declarations as the physical pack.

Quick Answers

Common questions about packaging and labelling compliance

Under Rule 6 of the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, a retail package must declare the name and address of the manufacturer, packer or importer, the country of origin for imports, the common or generic name, the net quantity in standard units, the month and year of manufacture, the MRP inclusive of all taxes, the unit sale price, and consumer care details, plus size or dimensions where relevant.
Yes. Imported packs can carry the Indian declarations on a sticker, provided it's legible, prominent, can't be easily removed and doesn't hide original information. Importers using Tier-2 or Tier-3 AEO bonded warehouses can affix them there before goods leave (2026 amendment).
The price per standard unit of the commodity, such as per kilogram, per litre or per unit, shown alongside the MRP so consumers can compare pack sizes.
Yes. Rule 6(10) requires e-commerce entities to display the mandatory declarations on the listing. From 1 July 2027, listings of imported products must also offer a searchable and sortable country-of-origin filter.
Rule 9 sets the minimum height of the numerals of the net quantity declaration according to the size of the package or its principal display panel. We check this on your artwork.
Mandatory declarations still apply, but since the October 2025 amendment the size of letters and the display panel for medical devices follow the Medical Devices Rules, 2017.
Rule 26 relaxes parts of the Rules for some packages, such as large packs above 25 kg or 25 litres (with exceptions) and packages sold directly to industrial or institutional consumers. We confirm whether your pack qualifies.
Officers can seize non-compliant packages and prosecute or compound offences under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009. Customs and marketplaces also check labels, so stock can be held or listings blocked.
