Quick Answers

Common questions about Legal Metrology advisory

Under Section 22 of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 and the Legal Metrology (Approval of Models) Rules, 2011, every model of a weight or measure, such as a weighing scale, fuel dispenser, water or gas meter, must be approved before it's manufactured or imported for sale in India. The model is tested against the applicable specifications.
Yes. The importer needs registration under Section 19 and the model must be approved. Under the Department of Consumer Affairs SoP of 9 June 2026, a model identical in all respects to one already approved in India, from the same foreign manufacturer, can get an endorsement without fresh testing.
LMPC is registration for packaged goods and their label declarations. Model approval is for weighing and measuring instruments themselves, covering their accuracy and design. A company selling packaged scales may need both.
The state Legal Metrology department, under the state's enforcement rules. Dealer licences are needed in each state where you sell weights and measures.
Many offences under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 can be compounded under Section 48 by paying a compounding amount, which avoids prosecution. We advise on eligibility and file the application.
Don't ignore it. Check what's alleged, the rule and deadline, preserve the seized samples' details, and reply with corrections and evidence. We draft the reply and handle compounding where appropriate.
The Legal Metrology (General) Amendment Rules, 2026 revised the specifications for non-invasive, non-automated sphygmomanometers in the Eighth Schedule of the General Rules, covering performance, safety and type approval test methods.
